Where: Dalhousie University Campus, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
When: May 21-24, 2019

The North American Association of Fisheries Economists (NAAFE) welcomes you to join us in Halifax, Nova Scotia for our tenth biennial Forum. Forum organizers Megan Bailey and Peter Tyedmers of Dalhousie University, and Tony Charles of Saint Mary’s University, join us in encouraging wide participation from all perspectives with interests in the economics of fisheries, seafood trade and aquaculture. Academics, industry and government representatives, along with those from foundations, agencies and NGOs are welcome to attend and share perspectives.
Below is a list of themes and topics for consideration. Please plan to attend and present your best work on these, or related fisheries, seafood trade, and aquaculture economics topics.
Themes (Topics)
- Wild capture fisheries (Bio-economic modeling, strategic interaction, fishing rights, transboundary fish, economics of bycatch, Indigenous fisheries)
- Aquaculture (Social license, emerging products and markets, fish feed, farming innovations)
- Markets (Consumers and retailers, eco-labels, community supported fisheries, traceability)
- Processing and distribution (Value chains, traceability, logistics, trade, supply chain waste)
- Ecosystems (Climate change, shifting stocks, ecosystem-based management, RFMO governance, Indigenous fisheries)
- Communities (Economics of wellbeing, livelihoods, small-scale fisheries, Indigenous fisheries, gender and fisheries)
The conference theme “Frontiers and Futures” will serve as a framework for cross-cutting submissions. Sub-themes here will include topics like Indigenous fisheries, EBM, climate change, and gender. When potential delegates submit abstracts, they will have a choice of submitting exclusively to a traditional theme and related sub-theme (for example, Aquaculture: fish feed), or also indicating that they would like their abstract considered for inclusion in a cross-cutting Frontiers and Futures theme.
Important Dates
- Opening of special session proposal submissions: August, 2018
- Opening of abstract submissions: November, 2018
- Abstract decisions: January, 2019
- Opening of online conference registration system: January, 2019
